Finding color profile information in a file

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

There is an ongoing discussion on the GIMP User mailing list regarding color profiles.  One user was having problems with GIMP reading proper profile information from files produced by Pentax cameras.  It turns out that the camera was placing the information in custom fields so GIMP EXIF support never sees it.
What I found interesting about [...]

Building GIMP 2.7.x from source

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I’m preparing to update my GIMP book and decided it would be best to work from the source repository.  A long time ago that repository was in CVS and you needed to download a bunch of GTK related packages as prerequisites.  This was actually pretty easy.  Then things moved to SVN and things were still [...]

TWAIN for Linux: is there a new scanning solution on the horizon

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

I’ve never been overly impressed with SANE because of the complexity of configuring it.  I always thought there should be a better way.  I’m not a Windows person but I’ve heard of TWAIN drivers for scanners.  Supposedly these make it easier to use scanners with GIMP under Windows.  The scanner manufacturers develop their drivers and [...]

Looking at 2.6

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I just upgraded my laptop to Fedora 10 this past week and, as I prepare my next article for Linux Format magazine, I noticed that I now have GIMP 2.6.3 as my default version of GIMP.  As a long time user of GIMP I don’t have much of a problem picking up on the changes [...]

New User FAQ

Monday, July 9th, 2007

There are a number of questions that arise on the GIMP User Mailing List quite frequently.  Often these questions are not even about getting help with using the GIMP yet take up much of the discussion.  Instead of rehashing those discussions repeatedly, it helps to have an FAQ that addresses these questions.  You should also [...]

Tips and Tricks and Resources

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

While writing the book I came across various tips and tricks that simply weren’t applicable to the tutorials I’d written about.  But since these are meaningful to users I thought it would be useful if I collected these into some searchable environment – like a web page.
So here they are, categorized as best as I [...]
