Using the Aiptek 12000U on Fedora 10 6

Back in late 2006 I bought an aiptek 12000u drawing tablet to work with gimp.  I had limited success back then and put the tablet back in the box.  I pulled it out again the other night to give it another try.  Without any additional configuration the wireless mouse worked on the tablet just fine.  Unfortunately, the pen was unresponsive.  It might be a bad pen.  I didn't dive too deep into it at the time.

I've noticed a fair number of hits on my site for Aiptek and I assume that others are having similar problems.  After reading a post on the GIMP User Mailing list this morning I decided to sit down and see what kind of information I could find on drawing tablets.

I did a little research on all the input drivers listed for Fedora 10's X.org distribution.  The results are little disheartening.  To summarize:  get a wacom.  It's the only thing that is likely to work correctly out of the box, even if they are a bit pricey.

I’m looking to pick up a replacement pen if you’re not using yours. Or I could take the whole kit’n’kaboodle off your hands for the right price. Contact my e-mail address.

    Hi Michael,
This is my first visit to your website. I am using a Medion branded Aiptek 12000U graphics tablet. The main problems I am experiencing at this time is the xorg driver has changed its API and the aiptek driver hasn’t followed suit. I am unable to close X Window with the tablet plugged in. I can still use the tablet and therefore cannot complain too loudly.

I’m glad you can at least use the tablet. I was never able to really get mine to work. I recently sold the tablet to a reader and now use a Wacom Bamboo. The Bamboo works beautifully and, despite my original thoughts on tablets, I’m quite happy with the small 6×4 (roughly) drawing area. Unfortunately I don’t keep up with the Aiptek driver anymore so can’t say if the driver development is ongoing. Anyway, thanks for the comments and best of luck with your Aiptek!

    Just FYI
I got an Aiptek 12000u for xmas with my old windows box. worked fine except the pen was junk, called aiptek and they sent 2more free.
    each worked fine

now years later after said box died, swithced to macbook
dug out the ol usb tablet plugged er up and it “works”
I can’t access any settings or config the buttons but macbook does recieve input and tracking (although only used about 2’x3′ of the large 12000u surface.
