Create hidden lighting displays

This process is for those willing to work with electrical components and isn't afraid of electrical wiring.  I don't recommend this for anyone who doesn't know how to replace an electrical cable to a household lamp, for example.

The things you need:

  • Bayonette lamp sockets
  • Bayonette lamps (voltage TBD)
  • A base for each lamp
  • Base side connectors for the wires (type TBD)
  • A transformer (electrical characteristics are TBD)
  • A box for the transformer
  • 20 gauge wire
  • Transformer side connectors for the wires

Basic process is to anchor the lamp sockets to a base and solder the wire connectors to the socket. The base is long enough but thin enough to fit under a rock wall or other heavy object.  A V-shaped piece of wood (painted silver to relfect) is placed behind the lamp so the light does not shine toward the viewer -it only shines toward the display.

On the transformer side, the transformer has 4 wires.  Two go to an electrical cable you plug into the wall.  The other two are connected to a series of wires that get soldered to connectors that are place on the box.

The connectors on the lamps and the box are supposed to allow you to easily wire the lamps to the box without worrying about the length of the wire.  If you need a longer wire, just use a longer wire.  If you need more lamps then you add more connectors to the box (as long as the transformer can support them – I'll make notes on this later).  When you take the village down later, you unplug the wires which makes storing the lamps and transformer a bit cleaner (no wires wrapped around everything).

That's the idea.  We'll see how much of this I can get built this year.
