{"id":692,"date":"2010-08-01T13:43:19","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T20:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.graphics-muse.org\/wp\/?p=692"},"modified":"2010-08-05T19:33:44","modified_gmt":"2010-08-06T02:33:44","slug":"64-vs-32-bit-flash-getting-full-screen-flash-to-work-under-f12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.graphics-muse.org\/wp\/?p=692","title":{"rendered":"64 vs 32 bit flash:  getting full screen flash to work under F12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the drawbacks to dropping cable TV was losing summer broadcasts of pro tennis.\u00a0 Recently my wife and daughter pointed out that you could watch some matches online via ESPN3.\u00a0 So I tried to get it on the media box hooked to the big screen TV.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got F12 on the media box running with a 64 bit installation.\u00a0 I installed this box with 64bit flash (v10.0 rc )before the Adobe bug forced everyone to Flash 10.1 and Adobe decided to drop 64 bit support for Linux (at least for that release).\u00a0 Everything on this setup was working fine until I tried to use ESPN3.\u00a0 That site shows a small window wrapped by all kinds of extra junk in a browser window that is 2\/3 the size of the physical display.\u00a0 That small video window is hard to see on the big TV screen.\u00a0 But there is a full screen option.\u00a0 Clicking on that displayed a thin horizontal strip across the display.\u00a0 It appeared I was stuck with watching tennis in a tiny little window.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I&#8217;m not the first to try this.\u00a0 There were two problems here.\u00a0 First, my flash plugin was a 10.0 rc release.\u00a0 This thin-strip problem was apparently a problem with that release.\u00a0 Since there is no 10.1 in 64bit I had to remove the 64bit libflashplayer.so installation and install the 32bit according to the instructions in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mjmwired.net\/resources\/mjm-fedora-f13.html#flash\">Mauriat Miranda&#8217;s guide<\/a>.\u00a0 But that was just the first fix.<\/p>\n<p>The second fix turned out to require <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.fedoraforum.org\/showthread.php?t=245615\">disabling hardware acceleration<\/a>.\u00a0 This setting can be found by right clicking over the flash video to get a menu.\u00a0 Choose the &#8220;Settings&#8221; option.\u00a0 The main window that opens should show your hardware acceleration setting.<\/p>\n<p>Disabling this has improved our use of flash on this box.\u00a0 Since it&#8217;s a dual core 2.7GHz AMD 64 Athlon, it&#8217;s plenty fast to handle the video in full screen though the video is a bit jumpy.\u00a0 I may need to tweak it some more, perhaps going to a lower resolution if possible.\u00a0 But I checked the Southpark site and it now plays full screen quite well.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll see how this configuration performs for us over time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the drawbacks to dropping cable TV was losing summer broadcasts of pro tennis.\u00a0 Recently my wife and daughter pointed out that you could watch some matches online via ESPN3.\u00a0 So I tried to get it on the media box hooked to the big screen TV.
