Building GIMP from source

I'm in the process of revising my last book, The Artist's Guide to GIMP Effects.  It will take about a year, I'm guessing.  To make sure its meaningful a little longer than the last version I'm working from the git repository.  Git is the replacement for cvs and svn that the gimp developers have recently migrated to.  Building from source always seems to require a wide range of prerequisites and since it has been awhile since I built from the repository I decided it might be helpful to make notes on how its done.

If you're interested, take a look at the blog entry over on the book's official site.
